INDUSTRY / Hygienic Touch Operable Aerial Display
In todayʼs New Normal, there is a rapidly increasing need for “touchless” so as to avoid contact with things wherever possible. Mitsubishi Electric has developed the Hygienic Touch Operable Aerial Display allowing users to operate the panel in mid-air without actually touching anything.
By combining retroreflective high-resolution aerial image display technology and sensor technology that detects the spatial position of the hand, users can intuitively operate a touch panel without touching anything. As the screen is not actually touched, it is a highly hygienic and safe display.
Highly accurate touch detection is achieved by acquiring three-dimensional positional data of the user’s hand with an infrared camera. Audio and visual feedback is also given to users confirming their “tap,” providing an intuitive interface similar to that of traditional touch panel screens. Furthermore, no biometric information, such as fingerprints which could be indirectly extracted, is left on the screen, and only the user is able to view the screen giving high levels of confidence in terms of security.

As a technology that addresses the “New Nomal”, which demands better hygiene and “touchless,” the technology is expected to be used in public facilities and equipment which could be used by any number of people. The benefit of touchless technology is in its ability to not only prevent infection but also to maintain a clean environment without contaminating equipment, as such it has the potential to be used in factories and hospitals where hygiene is strictly controlled.
Mitsubishi Electricʼs touchless technology contributes to safety and security in all aspects of life and industry in todayʼs New Normal.
